In a world full of instant gratification and convenience, waiting has become a foreign concept. Many of us are frustrated when we have to wait. But the Word of God, through various scriptures and biblical illustrations, shows us Christians are called to wait on God.
However, waiting often feels like you’re pulling teeth because you often have no control over the timing. Sometimes we get discouraged over dashed hopes and the unfulfilled longing of getting what we are waiting for.
Are you in the season of waiting? What are you waiting for? A kingdom spouse? A restored marriage? A job? A friend to give their life to Jesus Christ? A promotion at work?
As I have been reading through the Word of God this month, I’ve asked God to teach me how to be patient during this tough time, and I pray the following Bible verses will strengthen your faith, as they have strengthened me.
Jeremiah 29: 11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
As I go through the waiting season, the Holy Spirit has revealed to me to view a waiting season as an opportunity. That’s because God has a plan and purpose for us.
During the waiting season, although you may feel discouraged and lost because you don’t see anything in your life changing, don’t lose hope because God is secretly working in your heart in ways you can’t see.
Often, when you receive your breakthrough, you’ll face trials and tribulations. Those trials will make you appreciate the transformation God made in your life during your waiting season.
Think about Joseph. His 13-year journey from a loved son to slavery and imprisonment was a divine training ground, not a wasted delay. God used the waiting season to mold Joseph’s character--building integrity, resilience, unfailing faith, and management skills.
This transformed him from a naive dreamer into a wise leader ready to govern Egypt and save lives during the drought season.
Joseph’s story shows that in the waiting season, God is doing something you can’t see. He is working behind the scenes to build the character needed for the calling ahead.
Hebrews 10:36
“Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you may continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.”
Again, we live in a “have it now” society. We have instant information, microwaves, ATMs, and drive-through windows that allow us to get what we want instantly without the inconvenience of queuing and waiting. We want everything instantly.
But sometimes we have to wait. We also need to learn to trust God and have faith in Him, even as we wait for Him to answer our prayers.
As you wait for God to answer your prayers, don’t just sit on your couch and watch Netflix all day, hoping passively that God will answer you soon.
Actively wait on God to answer your prayers. Actively serve, trust Him, and speak words that agree with His Word.
The waiting season is a vital time to strengthen your faith, so always keep saying what God says. Your words are very crucial while you’re between “Amen” and “There it is!”
Hebrews 11:11
“By faith Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised”
This verse highlights that Sarah was able to conceive a child because she ‘considered him faithful who had promised.’ Thus, when waiting on God to fulfill His promises, it’s important to trust His character over human restrictions. You should have faith that God is reliable and faithful and will act in His perfect timing.
Don’t just have passive faith, be confident that God will do what He says He will do. You must also trust that God is working behind the scenes, even when everything seems the same.
Always remember instances where God has been faithful and when he answered your prayers. This will strengthen your faith for the current wait.
Job 23: 14
“For He will complete what He appoints for me, and many such things are in His mind.”
In Job 23: 8-9, Job was in great anguish, and he couldn’t trace God’s presence in his life, yet in verse. 10 he remains confident that God knows exactly what He is doing.
In this verse, Job acknowledges that God’s plans are fixed, personal, and perfectly carried out--even though life seems chaotic.
The surety of divine completion is what steadied Job’s faith in the waiting season.
If you’re currently waiting on God to answer your prayers, do it right by waiting well.
Work on things within your control and surrender everything else to God’s timeline, not yours. Trust that even in this season of ‘drought,’ God is working in the background, growing your faith and working according to His will.
Psalm 37:7
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.”
Probably the most daunting part in Psalm 37, the hardest thing the Lord is asking you, is to be still and wait patiently on Him… especially when you’re “fretting” (worried or worked up) about something.
Is it just me? But the commands in this passage, Psalm 37, are vital because they help us build up to this.
Most probably, you’re trusting in the Lord, following his commands and reading His word and even finding delight in Him, entrusting all your desires and worries to Him… and now He asks you to be still and wait patiently.
The word “still” in this verse means to rest, to stop, and be silent. God is saying that in order for you receive what you’re praying for, you must turn down the speed and volume of your life. Additionally, for you to be aligned with His will and what He is planning for you, you must tune out the world.
God sometimes allows you to be--or sometimes actively puts you--in a position where you have few choices but to wait on Him patiently and endure.
Often, when I find myself in those “wait patiently” situations in life, I ask myself whether the reason I’m here is because I’m not showing growth in the area the Lord is looking for. I also ask myself if I’m not hearing what God is trying to say to me.
Further, it’s crucial to remember that waiting isn’t simply a passive exercise, but rather an active one. You should confidently expect the results, and you must have the character to wait as long as necessary.
You’re waiting on God for something. And you can’t have the patience to wait on the Lord without trusting in Him.
You must surrender whatever it’s to God, listen for His voice, and then prepare yourself for what comes next. No matter how long it takes.
Scripture-Based Prayer For You as You Wait on God:
(Psalm 5:3, 27:13, 33:20,37:4, 37:7, 38:15)
Heavenly Father, you know my season of waiting. You know the beginning and the end of this season, no matter what, I can see help me to remain still, and wait on you patiently. My trust is in You, Almighty Lord, because You’re my help and shield. As I delight in You and wait for You to grant the desires of my heart, I put my hope in Your Word, and I will follow Your commands and instructions. Lord Almighty of heaven and earth, thank you for hearing my requests as I lay them before you and wait expectantly for Your answer. I will not be discouraged, and I’m confident I’ll see Your goodness in the land of the living. Strengthen my heart as I wait on You in Jesus mighty name, I pray and believe. Amen!
