Are you overwhelmed by a sense of despair because of what’s happening in your life?
Have you ever faced a threatening situation? Maybe you have a catastrophe knocking at your door right now.
Sometimes I have felt like dark forces have converged on my life, attacking me from all directions, trying to dim my light. Are you familiar with this scenario?
Other times, it’s just one person who’s being dishonest, rude, and hateful towards you, and that’s enough to make you despair.
No matter what you’re going through in life, there are times when we have to deal with dark forces that try to derail our spiritual journey.
How You Can Overcome Evil With Good
As Christians, we often focus on God’s nature as loving and how He is working in our lives and in the world. We try to see the good in all people and find the promises of good in all situations.
That is because the Bible promises:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.
This is a healthy attitude to have.
However, sometimes you need to confront the evil in your personal life and face it head-on.
That doesn’t mean you should fight your enemies or that you can resolve every evil manifestation that comes your way.
It’s crucial to always take a prayerful approach to thwarting and fighting any evil that shows up in your life.
Prayer is crucial in overcoming evil because your ultimate enemy is not a person--he is the devil. “For our struggle is not against the flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against authorities, against powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12
You’re engaged in this battle because you have been chosen as God’s army. God has given us weapons and armor to fight this battle. Prayer is a mighty weapon God has given us. If you use it skillfully, you’ll overcome evil, and you’ll be more than a conqueror in Jesus Christ.
How to Overcome Evil Through Prayer
Pray Always: You should be consistent in prayer, in good and bad times. Daily, habitual, personal prayers deepen our relationship with God. Joshua 23: 10, says, “One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.” This shows the importance of praying consistently because God will fight your battles as He promised. Also, you should pray with other Christians. Leviticus 26:8 says, “Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you.” This shows there’s strength in numbers.
Pray all kinds of prayers: Use various types of prayers to overcome evil. 1 Timothy 2:1 mentions a few types of prayers. Supplication is making requests to God. Intercession is seeking the presence and hearing of God on behalf of others. Don’t just pray for yourself, pray for others too--family members, political leaders, church leaders, the sick, the poor, and all other people. Thanksgiving is another form of prayer. Philippians 4:6 asks us to give thanks to God as we make our requests. Thank God, while you make your requests, don’t wait to thank Him after you get your answers. Repenting is also another way to get God’s attention. Repentance involves confession of your sins to God and turning away from them. Praying for divine protection is also key in overcoming evil. Jesus teaches us to pray to the Father to “deliver us from evil.” We’re no match for the devil; thus, it’s wise to ask God daily for His divine protection.
Pray in Spirit: Praying in spirit is praying in tongues. When you pray in tongues, it’s your spirit that prays. You may not understand what you’re saying, but you must trust the Holy Spirit for guidance.
Stay alert spiritually: Being alert refers to “being watchful”. Being watchful is being alert to those who are intent upon a thing.
Rely on the Holy Spirit and trust Him for divine revelation: Romans 8:26 says that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Wait for the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer. That’s because it is the Holy Spirit who gives us the revelations we need concerning the situations we face. Jesus Christ said that “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears and he will tell you what is yet to come.” John 16:13
Identify the evil forces that are operating: Sometimes, you can easily identify the dark forces at work. You’ll see them in major problems that exist in your home, community, or nation. Is there a sudden rebellion among the youths in your country? Are there issues with drugs, alcohol, or crime in your neighborhood? Are local churches splitting up? Do the women in your family have children out of wedlock or with multiple partners? Is there systemic jealousy in your family? Spiritual problems might be revealed as you read or listen to news. You can pray about spiritual issues and bring about change.
Use the word of God in your prayers: Ephesians 6:17 says, “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.” As you pray, it’s essential to declare what the word of God says. For instance, if you’re praying about demonic and witchcraft attacks in your life, you can declare Isaiah 54:17, which says that “No weapon formed against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and this is their vindication from me, ” declares the Lord.
Take your authority over all evil forces: In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, “Behold I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Speak directly to opposing spirits in the name of Jesus. When you speak God works. Sometimes you will see immediate results, but other times you have to keep praying for a while before you see any change. Don’t give up, remain strong and hold your ground in prayer. In Isaiah 60:22 God says, “the least of you will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will make it happen.”
Prayer is a powerful weapon that God has given us to fight spiritual battles. When you pray consistently you will overcome evil and you’ll experience tremendous results--not just for you, but for others too. As you surrender your life to God and have an intimate relationship with Him, He will help you to pray in a manner that results in change.
